Focus

Social innovation takes place in specific innovation environments. These environments can be considered as reservoirs of people, ideas, knowledge, capacities and capabilities which function as relevant inputs to social innovation processes. As such, they influence the innovation capacity of this environment which can also be seen as an innovation network. In order to understand the innovation capacity of an environment, we will firstly analyse how specific characteristics of the environment (such as the influence of competition or the dominance of a legal culture) influence the innovation capacity of a specific network of stakeholders (e.g. politicians, professional representatives).

Second, we will examine the expectations of the involved stakeholders concerning their positions, the type of relationships which they maintain, the leadership roles they expect and the trust that they have in each other. In so doing, we will acquire a more profound understanding of the interplay between the more static and institutional characteristics of the environment as well as the more dynamic characteristics of the environment and the willingness to innovate (innovation process). This is the first research topic to be addressed in Work Package 1 'Innovation capacities of innovation environments'.
